New Release
Wallace Stegner: Dean of Western Writers by Alex Beam will be released on February 18 and is available for preorder now. In this captivating biography, Beam takes readers through the life and complex legacy of one of the twentieth century’s most remarkable storytellers and chroniclers of the American West.
Throughout a career that spanned fifty years, Stegner authored fourteen novels and seventeen works of nonfiction. Raised on the Canadian–American frontier and educated in Salt Lake City, Utah, Stegner became the quintessential “Man of the West,” winning both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award.
A passionate environmentalist, Stegner served on the board of the Sierra Club, worked for the Secretary of the Interior, and wrote the influential Wilderness Letter, advocating for the healing power of open spaces. He also founded the renowned Stegner Writing Fellowship at Stanford University, which mentored writers such as Edward Abbey, Wendell Berry, Ken Kesey, Larry McMurtry, Sandra Day O'Connor, Tillie Olsen, and Scott Turow.
In his later years, Stegner questioned whether he had lived too far into the wrong century. He left Stanford when he felt that students no longer respected their professors, and later became embroiled in a plagiarism scandal that overshadowed his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Angle of Repose.
