| Salt Lake Tribune, Paul Swenson Sex and travel, marriage and divorce, hunting and civilization, real life beneath the veneer of lovely wives and childrenall the widening paradoxes of modern life are grist for the mill of cartoonist Calvin Grondahl's wickedly facile imagination. The flash points of Grondahl's hilarious social commentary often occur on the cutting edge of connection between Mormons and non-Mormons, husbands and wives, conservatives and free spirits, and sexists and liberationists. Grondahl, editorial cartoonist for the Ogden Standard Examiner and longtime observer of local folkways, expands his repertoire with this new book of cartoons. This is Utah humor with an edge. On the rim of the Grand Canyon, a middle-aged married couple barter their most precious possessions: The husband threatens to chuck a yapping pet, but his wife's checkmate is to dangle his golf clubs over the void. Beneath a living-room galley of cherished child photos, a Mormon mom holds the hand of her Neanderthal son. "Harold," she says to her stunned husband, "look at the beautiful tattoo our beautiful boy just got." His bulging bicep is enscripted with a "Families Are Forever" banner and Utah's most familiar temple. In Grondahl's world, cellular telephones, too many children and Franklin Planners all come under fire as root causes of coitus interruptus. But luckily, the laughs flow unabated. |
