BEST NOVEL, ASSOCIATION FOR MORMON LETTERS

Rejecting male stereotypes about women, Sillitoe looks beyond the surface of a Bountiful, Utah, community to examine one woman's struggle for autonomy. Megan Steven's ordinary and happy life takes an unexpected turn one night when her soft-spoken husband does not return home as usual after work. Neither widowed nor divorced, yet suddenly single, Megan finds herself increasingly estranged from the comfortable assumptions, institutions, and friends that she thought would always support her. Struggling to see herself and her four children through the crisis, Megan determines not to remain a victim. In the process, she will discover where her husband Richard has gone and why.
