He was a leader in business and also helped found the Republican Party in Utah, famously winning an election to the state constitutional convention with the help of zealous supporters who stuffed ballot boxes. A polygamist, he nevertheless equivocated on the question of post-Manifesto polygamy in his testimony on the subject before the U.S. Senate.

Jean Bickmore White is an emeritus professor of political science at Weber State University. She is the author of Charter for Statehood: The Story of Utah's Constitution and A Fortunate Fellow: The Memoirs of Ezra T. Clark. She lives with her husband in Farmington, Utah.
