There are many ways to approach scripture. Although commentaries from theological, historical, linguistic, and other scholarly approaches abound, most of us read scripture for the pleasure of it—for the sense of personal fulfillment and enrichment. As we read the text, we bring our individual perspectives to bear based on our personal journeys and current intellectual and spiritual understanding. With this in mind, Robert Rees and Eugene England solicited six prominent LDS writers to offer informed personal views derived from various portions of the Book of Mormon, followed by the scriptural text itself. Their insights will certainly enhance the enjoyment and understanding of other readers. The contributors are Claudia L. Bushman, Susan Elizabeth Howe, Linda Hoffman Kimball, Douglas Thayer, Steven Walker, and William A. Wilson.

Robert A. ReesRobert A. Rees has been Professor of English, Assistant Dean of Fine Arts, and director of Continuing Education in Arts and Humanities at UCLA. He is the editor of "Proving Contraties": A Collection of Writings in Honor of Eugene England, among other works.

Eugene England, the late Professor of English at Brigham Young University, died in 2001 before completing the Reader's Book of Mormon project, which he initiated. He was the author of six books including Dialogues with Myself and Making Peace.
