Utah, the Mormons, and the West Series No. 12
Hardback. 212 Pages. / 0-941214-43-5 / $24.95

In 1923 James Taylor Harwood began writing his memoirs shortly after his wife Harriett's death. He recorded the details of his youth, his studies and travels in Europe, the creative process behind his most significant paintings, and his teaching career. Then, from 1928, the memoirs became a journal that documented his second marriage and later works. A man of many interests, he was also a gentleman farmer and an accomplished printmaker.

Most importantly, Harwood was ranked among the most substantial contributors to Utah impressionism. Actively producing oils, watercolors, pastels, pencil drawings, and etchings for over half a century, his works are prized items today in art galleries and institutions throughout the state. His personal account, along with the editor's informative notes, enhances appreciation not only of Harwood but of the issues that shaped the aesthetic sense among a sometimes hostile and mostly indifferent populace.

Robert S. OlpinRobert S. Olpin is an emeritus professor of art history at the University of Utah. Prior to his U of U tenure, he taught at Boston University and the Massachusetts College of Art.
